Common questions about anxiety therapy

  • First we will assess your anxiety type and severity as well as what else is going on in your life.

We will then get to know each other, build trust, and set meaningful and measurable goals based on your values.

If anxiety is interfering with your daily functioning, I will teach you simple ways to feel more in control of your body and thoughts.

I provide lots of psychoeducation about how the brain works. We may not know why it does things, but we know how to create new neuropathways to reduce anxiety.

We will likely work through three key models of treatment.

    1. cognitive: learn about thinking errors that create or maintain our difficult emotions.

    2. exposure: behaving in ways to face your fears in order to defeat your anxiety

    3. hidden emotions: is there another valid emotion or problem right now that you've been pushing aside?

Before moving on to new topics or ending therapy, we anticipate setbacks. It's just human. We prepare for these times so you have the tools to help get yourself back on track first. Of course, you may still be seeing me or schedule again for a tune-ups when you need it.

  • I can show you ways to calm your anxiety from day one. Most clients feel some emotional relief during our first consultation and again at each session. I teach how to understand and manage anxiety on many levels.

It's also quite common for anxiety and other feelings to increase the first few sessions. That’s because we are now addressing emotions you are used to avoiding as a way of coping.

Although your feelings and body sensations are hard to manage at times, they themselves are not bad. I'll teach you to appreciate what they've been doing and saying about you all this time.

Successful anxiety treatment requires a person to face their fears. Avoidance seems to help short term, but actually feeds the anxiety. We will collaborate to customize a gentle approach and path to benefit you in the long run.

  • Yes, I ask anyone who works with me to get one or more books and I will make specific suggestions during our consultation or intake.

My top recommendations are When Panic Attacks by Dr. David Burns or his latest book, Feeling Great. You can find these on Amazon or in bookstores.

For specific types of phobias or OCD, I will suggest additional books.

  • Yes, and I am passionate about it! If you've done the research, you already know this is the most effective approach to treating OCD and other specific types of phobias or fears. With confidence, I can gently guide you through this process because it works.
