Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Tucson

I offer TEAM (Testing, Empathy, Agenda Setting, and Methods) CBT to all my clients. TEAM is an advanced style of CBT for individuals developed by Dr. David Burns as an evidence-based therapeutic approach that works for a variety of issues: moods, relationships, and unwanted behaviors. It incorporates tools from many schools of therapy. It works especially well because we build an open and collaborative client-therapist connection as we work through the TEAM model:

Testing: This involves measuring symptoms at the start and end of each session, so we can aim to decrease unpleasant symptoms and increase positive feelings over time. The feedback I receive from clients each session helps us modify what we are doing together as we track progress.

Empathy: A crucial component of TEAM CBT, empathy emphasizes the therapeutic relationship. I strive to genuinely understand and validate your feelings, fostering a safe environment for exploration and healing. This is key to the success of treatment. There’s a risk that you may not care what I know until you know that I care.

Agenda setting: This element refers to how I collaborate with you to establish specific goals for therapy. We also need to look at how there may be some advantages to negative feelings and problematic behaviors, as hard as that is to admit. Within our patterns are some really deep values that we are trying to protect. When we look at this from a new perspective, it can help us get unstuck so the progress we make can last.

Methods: There are over 50 powerful tools that we can choose from so you can fill your toolbox with what works the best for you. What helps you now will help you later when there are setbacks, and you can always add more tools when life presents you with new challenges. You will create healthier patterns of thinking and behaving.

A proven framework for successful therapy.

You’ve tried therapy before and didn’t see results.

That’s too common of a story and it’s time to break the cycle.

Therapy is an investment on so many levels.

The time, money, and effort can be hard to commit to. Unlike some other styles of therapy, the warm and connected approach of TEAM CBT is designed and proven to be more active and therefore more effective than traditional talk therapy, so you can achieve your goals and complete therapy.

I have seen how well it works, both professionally and personally. I have become a better therapist, mom, friend, and wife because I practice what I preach and use the same approaches I teach clients to help myself and make sure I’m in the best state of wellness to help others.

Therapy can improve all areas of your life.

TEAM CBT works well for anxiety and other moods, relationship issues, stopping or starting behaviors, and trauma healing.

I consistently invest in trainings and consultation groups that take place weekly and monthly. I’m a passionate lifelong learner who re-invests what I earn into what I can learn to help my clients with the highest quality of therapy.

More about TEAM (Testing, Empathy, Agenda-Setting, Methods)

  • Good question—that’s what I first wondered, too! No, it’s just the two of us, working as a team. I guess Dr. Burns just wanted something easy to say to help his style of CBT stand out. It’s taught and used in many countries, but is more well-known in other parts of the US.

  • It is called "CBT on steroids" for a reason! When I met David Burns at a conference in 2018 and learned about how effective and amazing TEAM is, I was so excited that I've been learning and practicing it ever since.

    • The style and process of TEAM is focused on making sure you and I are on the same page every step of the way.

    • To do this, I ask that you fill out a brief survey at the beginning and end of ach session to see how you’re doing and if progress is being made.

    • I also value and want written feedback about how the session was for you, which is not something you typically are asked with any kind of service.

    • We address and work on overcoming what gets you stuck so the tools will work.

    • There are more than 50 tools to try, and we will find the handful that work best for you.

    • Once you find what works, you can use those tools whenever you have setbacks.

  • I know the word “homework” can bring up resistance. Life is busy and lots of things can get in the way of even the well-intended and motivated person.

Of course you could benefit from whatever we talk about or do in session. Yet I would not expect big changes to happen or last if you don’t do some work in between on your own.

That’s why it’s important to talk about what you are willing to do and get creative before you make a decision about homework.

What’s your learning style? Listening, reading, writing, quietly thinking? Most of us enjoy doing one or more of these as hobbies and can use the same preferences to improve
